You will see a series of icons and logos on the profile pages throughout this guide. The presence of a particular icon or logo indicates that the featured organisation meets a specific criterion. All of our Diversity Champions are working hard to support their LGB staff and these icons and logos represent just some of the initiatives and activities they can do in their journey to create truly inclusive workplaces. Read on to understand what each graphic signifies.
Everyone in an organisation has a role to play to make their workplace more gay-friendly. Having senior and influential people stand up for equality and take a leadership role in the diversity agenda is crucial to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Senior sponsors are not necessarily lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) themselves, but they recognise the essential role that they can play in promoting sexual orientation equality, fostering inclusive workplaces and supporting the development of their LGB staff.
Employee network group
Network groups help to support gay staff and promote a more inclusive working environment. Organisations that have an LGB staff network group are making a clear commitment to equality and diversity. Network groups can have many valuable roles including advising on internal policy and procedure relating to LGB issues in the workplace, supporting the professional development of network members and putting on awareness raising events.
LGB-inclusive diversity training for staff
LGB-inclusive diversity training is a vital tool for helping organisations, managers and staff understand the negative impact that homophobic behaviour in the workplace can have. It can help people think about and question their own biases and how this might affect the way they relate to colleagues who are different to them.
Staff surveys are an important way for organisations to understand more about their employees and how they can better support them. Monitoring sexual orientation and asking specific questions about the experience of LGB staff can help identify problem areas, allowing employers to effectively target and deal with bullying or other issues in particular parts of the organisation.
Stonewall Top 100 Employer
The Stonewall Top 100 Employers, based on organisational performance in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, is Britain’s leading benchmark to assess what employers are doing to tackle discrimination and create inclusive workplaces for their LGB employees. If an organisation has the Top 100 Employer logo on their page it means they’re one of the best places in the country for gay people to work.
Stonewall Healthcare Top 10
The Healthcare Equality Index is a new tool for health organisations to benchmark and track their progress on equality for their LGB patients and communities. Stonewall’s Top Ten Healthcare Organisations in England are committed to improving the health of LGB people. These healthcare organisations recognise the importance of promoting equality and have taken active steps to improve their services for lesbian, gay and bisexual patients.
Stonewall Education Equality Index
The Stonewall Education Equality Index is a comprehensive annual benchmarking exercise for local authorities, showcasing the work they’re doing to celebrate difference and prevent and tackle homophobic bullying in schools as well as support LGB young people in their local communities. This year’s Index was extremely competitive with 42 local authorities from across the country taking part – the highest number of participants ever.
Stonewall Global Diversity Champions
The Global Diversity Champions programme is Stonewall’s best practice employers’ forum for global organisations. Members of the programme represent a diverse range of industries from investment banks, the armed forces, leading retailers and international charities. These organisations have made significant progress in eliminating discrimination in Britain and are now eager to learn how they can extend their work to fulfil a global commitment to equality and overcome the challenges of supporting their lesbian, gay and bisexual staff around the world.
