The county council is responsible for providing a range of strategic services for the people of Gloucestershire, a county of approximately 500,000 people.

The county is accountable for services to children and families, including: safeguarding and ensuring that all children receive access to good education; adult social care; highway maintenance; planning; economic development; waste management and libraries. There are 298 county schools which educate 81,374 children. Some of these services are delivered through contracts with individual companies or through partners.
